The water absorption of materials is an important factor to consider when choosing insulation materials. At room temperature, the thermal conductivity of water is 23 times of that of air. After absorbing water, the insulation material will not only greatly reduce its thermal insulation performance, but also accelerate the corrosion of metal, which is very harmful. At present, most of the insulation materials in China do not hate water and have high water absorption, so the waterproof requirements of the external protective layer are very strict, which increases the cost of the external protective layer, and puts forward higher requirements for the stability of the material, cost, construction technology and so on.

At present, many insulation materials have different defects in application: glass wool boards absorb moisture easily, are not suitable for low-temperature environment, and are not suitable for the temperature environment above 450 degrees; mineral wool also has water absorption, which is not suitable for low temperature environment, and can only be used in high temperature without water; polyurethane foam and polymer. Styrene foam is not suitable for high temperature, and is flammable, constriction and toxic gas. Foam glass is sensitive to thermal shock and is not suitable for rapid change of temperature.
